The creator of the iconic NOLA Muffuletta sandwich was Mr. Salvatore Lupo, of Central Grocery store, an Italian immigrant who started making it in 1906. Mr. Lupo took a popular Sicilian bread sold by neighborhood bakers called Muffuletto, opened it in half, and placed mounds of Italian cold cuts and cheeses between top and bottom. For good measure, he topped it with a relish he made of red and green peppers green and black olives, capers, celery and pickled onions. Believe it or not, it was this relish that made the sandwich famous. Chef Lippe presents his version properly condimented with Italian spices, white balsamic vinegar and extra virgin olive oil.
